M.W.Bro. OPKAR SINGH SANDHU
Grand Master's Biography
M.W. Bro. Opkar Singh Sandhu was born in Nairobi, Kenya on July 31st, 1946. A member of the Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, he started out an apprentice quantity surveyor with a consulting firm in Nairobi, soon after graduating from high school. After a few years of work experience, he completed his studies in London, England in 1969. With over 30 years of experience in Quantity Surveying, Construction Estimating and Project Management, Bro. Sandhu currently holds the position of Director of Construction for a prominent developer/builder, specializing in the custom built homes and high-rise condominiums market of Montreal.
Soon after their marriage, M.W. Bro. Sandhu and wife Deepi moved from hot and sunny Nairobi to the often too cold city of Montreal in 1975, which, somehow they chose to make their future home. They are the proud parents of two lovely children; daughter Jas and son Sandeep, both of whom are graduates of McGill University, Montreal.
M.W. Bro. Sandhu was initiated in Greenfield Park Lodge No. 133, in 1983, and served as WM in 1992 and 1997. He served as Secretary of the Masters, Wardens and Past Masters Association of the St. Lawrence District in 1992 and 1993 and, was elected District Representative in 1994.
M.W. Bro. Sandhu was appointed DDGM of the St. Lawrence District in 1995. He later served on the Steering Committee of the GLQ, from the year 1996 through 2002 and as Chairman of the Committee on Jurisprudence from the year 2002 through 2005. In 2005 he was elected to the office of Deputy Grand Master.
M.W. Bro. Sandhu is a Scottish Rite Mason of the class of 1991. He served as Commander-in-Chief of the Montreal Sovereign Consistory in 2003 and, as Thrice Puissant Grand Master of the Hochelaga Grand Lodge of Perfection in 2004. He was coronated a 33o Honorary Inspector General in September 2005.
M.W. Bro. Sandhu was made a Knight of the Royal Order of Scotland in May, 2006.
A proud member of the Sikh Community of Greater Montreal, M.W. Bro. Sandhu is an active member of the Sikh Temple, Gurudwara Sahib Quebec, where he continues to serve on the Board of Directors.
In addition to his busy Masonic and cultural carrier, M.W. Bro. Sandhu has served his local community as an active member of the Kinsmen Club of Montreal South Shore since 1978. During this long tenure, he served the District Six of the Association of Kin Clubs of Canada first as the District Deputy Governor in 1985-86 and then as District Treasurer in 1990-91.
M.W. Bro. Sandhu was installed Grand Master of Freemasons of Quebec on May 26, 2007.
